Viva del Sol!

Good morning!

The sun finally came out yesterday and we had a wonderful hot and muggy day in Santo Domingo. Tropical Storm Bonnie dumped a lot of water on the island which affected the phones and internet connections. We have internet today, but might not have it again tomorrow as they work on the phones.

Yesterday we took it easy and spent some time shopping and exploring the city on foot. We have all sorts of Dominican goodies to bring home. We certainly did our part in supporting the Dominican economy. Mama Joe we don't think Philip is bringing home a tarantula...

We had all sorts of adventures surrounding our meals yesterday. We went to a Chinese buffet for lunch. For dinner we walked to our favorite pizza place, Pizzarelli's, it's a close walk by Dominican standard; meaning it's on the island of Hispanola and not quite to Haiti.

We're off to tour the old city and will go to church later this afternoon. It's a special service honoring Fathers. We will sing a few songs and Emma and Elijah will share their testimonies. Please pray that we will be encouraging and God honoring during our time with the Dominican people today.

We'll have a few students post later tonight and we'll put some pictures up too. Everyone is feeling well and looking forward to the rest of our time here.

  4. The DR team was prayed for this morning at the IBC Worship Service.... Pastor Joyce did a great job communicating the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. We need to release ourselves to His work... praying that for all of you today. To be open and ready for what God has for you and willing to take that step of faith!
Ryan.... did you get dad's e-mail? It looks like you and Devin will like in Dupont. Kara can fill you in on what Dupont is like! Bobby and Zach are in another dorm. Dad is ready for tomorrow! Praying that it will all go smoothly! We love you and miss you... it's a little more quiet than usual around here! We are still in that typical summer HEAT wave.... UGH! Maybe a little relief tomorrow! Love you son! Praying for you today!

  5. You are half-way through your adventure already! And I bet you feel like there is so much more work to do and so many more people to meet and serve. Each day there are people God places in your path who need a kind word or a gentle touch. You are Jesus' voice and hands to these needy people and I know He is pleased that each one of you answered His call to service this summer. Keep posting accounts of your experiences. We really enjoy learning from you!
Emma- We love you and we miss you! You were missed at Meredith and Ryan's wedding. Except for it being 102 degrees in the shade (REALLY), everything perfectly reflected Meredith and Ryan's relationship. Daddy and I had fun being the photographers, and Alex and Lindsay each played well. Mr. E was the vocal soloist!
Back to everyone else on the team - Your cheerful and loving attitudes bring much joy and comfort into the lives of the people you're encountering. Each one of you is in the Dominican Republic for the Lord's purpose. Be that blessing in another's life!
    Hugs from home,
    Mrs. Barker

  6. Lizard,
I love and miss you - and am praying for you all the time! Abby left for her DC trip on Sat, so the house feels empty without you both! Hope you're having a neat time of growth, and that God is showing you great and glorious things. I'm praying for you!
    Love, Dad

  9. Hi Webster,
Thinking about you and praying for all of you every day. Know you are doing great things for the Lord. Share all the hugs you can with those you come in contact with. If they don't remember anything else, they will remember those. Our lives have been changed by the presence of God's love. I know the people of the DR are experiencing His love through you. I love you, Webber. See you Sat. Mom
