Yesterday we went to a church in a Haitian community and had a VBS for the children. Pastor Samuel called it a "Happy Afternoon." There certainly was A LOT of happy! (aka mobbing of Americans by Dominican children) We painted faces, sang songs (in Spanish of course), made a billion balloon animals, and tried to control the mass of happiness.
I spent time with a little boy named Junior. He loved wearing my sunglasses while I took his picture. Cameras are a funny thing here... it amazes them to see themselves in that small, yet entertaining screen.
Last night for dinner we went to El Conuco and there was music playing constantly. We couldn't help but move in our seats. Finally, after dinner we were able to see the Merengue, a Dominican dance. It was just contagious! We began to dance as well. Everyone danced with pretty much everyone... we just danced the night away! Music and Movement as we call it. There was a lot of it last night!
Well it's time for lunch: Beans and Rice. A common food group this trip.
See you all Saturday!

Most of us are well, though tired. Kara and I (Laura) have both been battling migraines the past 2 days; we have a couple of team members with minor GI complaints. Overall the students are continuing to show exceptional attitudes and grace in the face of ever-changing schedules and times of inactivity. We remain proud of them.
Hi Team!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you are having a wonderful time... so sorry about those that are not feeling 100%! We will pray for you.... So happy that you were able to have a "Happy Afternoon" yesterday with the children! I am sure you made their day! Love and attention are all that little ones desire! Pour in the story of Jesus love for them and I am sure that it was truly a happy, happy afternoon!
I am praying for you Laura and Kara! So sorry about your headaches!
Keep strong, encourage each other! Finish well!
Love you all so much! Hugs to Ryan! We have missed you and will see you Saturday!
Love, Maribeth and Mom to Ryan!
I am praying for you all today, that the GI upsets would resolve and that Kara and Laura's headaches would ease. Those kind of issues can affect all your interaction. I will pray for some rest time as well as it sounds like you all have been running at full speed.
ReplyDeleteI pray also for a strong finish and encouragement for each of you on the team. We all miss you and look forward to seeing you in just a few days! Dad, Kim and Kathryn will be at the airport Phil! I can not wait to hear all your stories!
May our Lord strengthen and encourage you all today!
lovingly, mj
Javalina?? Now I'm curious...
ReplyDeleteWhat great life lessons in adaptability and finding contentment in whatever situation the Lord gives you all, including stepping up in maturity when your leaders feel under the weather. That's Biblical! As you worship in church, serve at the hospital, visit the barrios, or just hang out together, may you
sense the Lord's presence and leadership. Beans and rice are the answer to many hungry people's prayers. I hope you are complimenting the cooks! I think I will cook beans and rice for Daddy and James tomorrow night so we can taste a bit of your DR experience. (swim meet tonight) We will continue to pray for all of you the rest of this week; now we know to emphasize good health in our prayers! You are bringing heavenly sunshine to the people of the DR. Keep up the Good Work!
More hugs from home,
Mrs. Barker/Mom
p.s. to Javalina: Daddy is having lunch with Stewart Young on Friday...his best friend in 1st grade! He is the one in the lunchroom stories about chicken legs walking and green peas flying.... Stewart will be here for one day on a business trip.
Praying for you all to stay healthy and continue to serve with open hearts. It sounds like God is doing great things through your mission team. Sure am anxious to get all the details of your trip and see the pictures. May God bless you all. PS--Kristen, Have a great birthday in the DR tomorrow! Judy
ReplyDeleteCan;t believe your trip is almost due to come to an end. Sounds as if you've done great things in the service of our great God. We continue to pray for the entire team and look forward to your return, knowing you've been a shining light for our Lord's kingdom. God Bless.

Sounds like you all have had an amazing trip and accomplished much! Laura, Mark was excited to hear that the conference room was almost completed - something that has been needed for a while! We are praying for you and Kara and hope that by now the migraines are gone so that you and the team can make the most of your last 2 days there. We miss you and can't wait to hear all the details!
